Traffic Analysis

I didn’t realize it, but the end of the month marks Unknown Dog’s 1 year anniversary! Wow!

UD is a low traffic blog. That said, here were the top 5 posts from the last year in terms of hits, as reported by my webserver logs:

  1. Oracle Decode
  2. Tom’s Java App
  3. ‘Wicked’ Book Review
  4. Get Your War On
  5. ODDIO Overplay

In retrospect, I am not surprised that the technical subjects garned the most hits. I am pretty quick to turn to the web when I am stumped on a new technical problem, and I think it is a safe bet that the same lazy method is popular with lots of folks. I think it is easier to get a page indexed in the search engines when one is using fairly specific techincal terms in the posts, which both the Decode and Java App posts use.

Post #3 strikes me as somewhat of a surprise. Re-reading my review of Wicked, it is clear that it didn’t really qualify as a well written piece of work. It is interesting that the Get Your War On and the Oddio Overplay articles had enough hits to make it in the top five. It may be the case that folks were using them as bookmarks.

Other honorable mentions include Tom’s music review of the Shins at #7, our Exquisite Corpse experiment at #8, and Tom’s George Lakoff review at #9.

Interesting. Do you have stats on total traffic. What is the estimate of how many people stumble across this place in addition to the select few regulars?

It is a little hard for me to figure out what is blog traffic vs other odd bturnip.com tidbits. For instance, my old sound clip page is the second hit on a Google search for “bturnip”, and that page hasn’t been visibly linked anywhere from bturnip.com for months. Incidently, Unknown Dog is the #1 hit on a search for bturnip, at least on 8/22/2005. That is a big change- a few months ago, I don’t even think I was on the first few pages.
