Getting ready for vacation

Road trip coming up.  My Flex seats six and there will be six passengers for this one.  A little more storage space was in order.  This set up in the picture cost me under $250.

  •  Pro Series 63153 60″ x 24″ Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier (Black) {amazon.com}
  • Rola 59102 Expandable Hitch Tray Cargo Bag {amazon.com}
  • 2@Trailer Lights {lowes.com}
  • Trailer wire with 4 flat connectors {lowes.com}
  • Trailer wire{lowes.com}
  • 3@18 gallon Rubbermaid containers
  • zip ties, tap splices, and heat shrink butt connectors, wire wrap were already on hand.

Assembling and wiring the cargo carrier was about an hour’s work.  It goes a lot faster if you don’t do what I did and cut the wrong 4 flat connector.

The 18 gallon Rubbermaid setup fits the un-expanded bag perfectly- if anything it is a bit snug.  I’m ok with snug in this case because the liftgate will clear the loaded cargo carrier with a little room to spare.

    How does the Pro Series 63153 work out on the Flex for you? I have a Flex with a hitch and was going to buy the Pro Series 63153 for it. How about the exhaust from the Flex? I was worried about melting plastic bins or covers… or is the cargo carrier far enough away?
    Thanks.

      I’m pretty happy with it. I drove 2000+ miles with it and it worked out great. The cargo carrier has a goose neck that elevates the platform higher than the exhaust. We didn’t notice any problems from the exhaust heat.
