iPods

Anyone have an iPod, or can anyone at least educate me on the merits of owning one, simplicity of use, etc? I ask because my wife tells me she’s thinking of getting me one for Xmas and asked me if it’s something I would want. I couldn’t come up with an answer. On the one hand, I definitely like music, and hey, all the kids seem to be doing it. On the other hand, I’m not sure how much it would benefit me personally.

I also have to consider that I doubt I’m even allowed to bring it into work, which probably alone kills any reason I might get one. If it can plug into a computer and download stuff, The Man probably doesn’t want me having one in the workplace where I’m on a workstation that contains classified documents. But I still wouldn’t mind learning more about the things, just to stay hip, ya know?

This might belong under “music” but I’m just going to file it under general for now. The Bturnip can make an executive decision on that one if he sees fit.

And while I’m thinking of it, Happy Turkey Day. I’ll be out of town until Saturday, and most likely maintaining radio silence.

Yeah, I would be stunned if you could bring it work, as you could easily use the iPod as portable data storage and make off with 20GB+ of classified stuff.

People bring iPods to work over here all the time. Maybe they’re not supposed to, but I don’t think anybody gives a shit. Hell, I walk around here with a thumb drive, a pocket pc, and a laptop which I connect to the network and then take home with me every day. You don’t have to connect your iPod to your computer to listen to it, so just saying, “OK, I won’t connect it to anything” may be enough to let it slide.
I think you’d be fine bringing it in and listening to music on it.
The advantages are that you can basically store all the music you’d ever want to listen to on one tiny little walkman, which also connects easily to your car stereo. No more CDs or tapes. Owners that I know tend to love them, although they do occasionally report hardware failures, but I think Apple is pretty good about fixing or replacing them while under warranty.
They’re not cheap, though. Between $300 and $400 is a lot to pay for a glorified walkman.
Heather is dying for one, too, but I think I’m too cheap to spring for it. I don’t even celebrate Christmas anyway.
