Virgina Tech’s win over Miami, in Miami, gave the Hokies the ACC Conference title in their first season. Not bad at all considering that early polls put the #9 Hokies as low as 9th in the conference.
Virginia Tech lost to #1 USC in the season opener 24-13, and lost a squeker to NC State 17-16. They also beat (at the time) #7 West Virginia, #16 UVA, and #9 Miami, each time going in as the lower ranked team. Virginia Tech can deliver when needed, and they are going to need it come Bowl time.
Virginia Tech gets to play #3 Auburn in the Sugar Bowl. Auburn may be out for blood, but they may be like the Texas Longhorns and get the stuffing knocked out of them. I am hoping for a good game. Both teams have a lot of incentive to win big, Virginia Tech as the giant killer and Auburn as a spurned BCS championship contender.
In other news, Razorback basketball played their only game in North Little Rock last weeked, dropping the game to #3 Illinois by 8 points. Not too shabby, considering that #1 Wake Forest was taken out to the woodshed by this same team the week before.
One of the sports radios guys was saying a few months ago what a joke the ACC was and how Miami and Florida State were playing to decide the title on opening week. Guess that shows him. I really like Va. Tech football too. The school that gave us Bruce Smith and Michael Vick has a great style of play. Strong defense and special teams play second to none. In fact, NFL teams send their coaches to Blacksburg to study special teams play and “Beamer Ball.”
I think they have a great shot to beat Auburn. Va. Tech is playing better as the year has progressed. Auburn got the shaft by the BCS, but there are two ways to look at that. They could put a chip on their shoulder and play with a vengeance, or they could say “screw it, we can’t win anything anyway, why bother?” Even if they show up to play, Va. Tech’s defense should keep them in the game.
What is the state of Arkansas basketball anyway? Sounds like not too shabby, but when they got rid of Nolan Richardson I know they were involved in some controversy and it sounded like they had some rebuilding to do.
UVA caved in every big game they had this year. While not very surprising, it was still very disappointing. That Miami loss especially, billed by the commentators as “maybe the biggest game in the history of UVA football” was a total letdown. They had already laid down to Florida State, but a big win against Miami would have erased that. Instead, it pretty much put the final nail in any hopes that this team would play with heart. The loss to Tech had to be expected after the other two. Oh well.
I wouldn’t be surprised if all that talent at linebacker decided to hit the NFL early and get out of that pussy program. I guess I’ll just hope for better things out of UVA basketball this year. They appear to have some talent for a change.
