This was a request from one of the teachers at Gabe’s school. My original goal was to make it completely from scraps, but the relatively large size nixed that plan. Birch plywood for the outer case and a hardboard back were purchased, the rest was repurposed from scrap on hand.
I put Gabe to work- he was an excellent helper on this one:
I had to help the box joints out some, which didn’t make for lines as crisp as I wanted, but it worked out overall:
I was pleased with the plywood banding I use on the front face of the case. I tried an iron-on variety and it went together well and the material match is very good. I used boiled linseed oil as a barely there finish.
do you have any plans for this? I would like my husband to build some for me and I am looking for some plans or at least some tips. 🙂 anything would be helpful!

I pretty much winged this one and made it up as I went along. I used a dado blade for the grooves for the shelves and built a box joint jig for the outside case. The trickiest part was getting the grooves lined up for the vertical dividers.
Box joints look nice, but it was a bit of a pain in the neck to get them right with my homemade jig and the relatively bulky size of the case sides. Worrying about voids in the plywood was extra work, as well. The end result wasn’t terrible, but not as neat as I would have liked. Good luck with your project!
