Eternal Reefs

I’ve finally found what seems like a worthwhile thing to have done with me when I kick the bucket. If I don’t get my wish of being cast out to sea on a raft that is then set ablaze by a burning arrow shot from the beach like the Vikings, then I might as well be part of these Eternal Reefs. I might have to bring my dogs with me too.

Really bad writing

I present to you, the passage that made me quite convinced that continued reading of The Trolley, written by Claude Simon and and translated from French by Richard Howard, was a complete waste of time:

Foreign Cars

USA is the undisputed king in automobile consumption and almost every car maker in the world markets their cars in the United States. Almost. What about those car makers with a very small or a non-existant foothold in the US Market? Lots of neat little models out there not on US roads. Check them out via the wonder that is the internet- most sites in English:

This is by no means the entire list. Post your own favorite obscure-to-the-USA automaker!

Patch the Fox

The bad news is that there is a slightly obscure security flaw in Firefox. The good news is that it is dead simple to change Firefox’s configuration to plug the security hole.

USGS Landsat Project

The [USGS Landsat Project] has some impressive satellite pictures of the damage from the Hurricane Katrina flooding. [New Orleans], [Biloxi] have before and after pictures. The up close and personal pictures of devastation are one thing, but these pictures really give a sense of scale.

Other items of interest in the [Main Gallery] currently features some wildfires in Nevada and the Black Hills of South Dakota, icebergs and glaciers in the Antarctic, the Grand Canyon and Mount St. Helens in Washington State.

If that doesn’t knock your socks off, the [Change Over Time] gallery is amazing. Big geography changes in the Aral Sea, The big Tsunami of 2004, Mississippi Delta over a 30 year span and more.

NPR Live Concert Series goodness

Just last month I was [raving] about NPR’s [Live Concert Series]. Far from resting on their laurels, NPR has announced two more shows: [Sigur Rose on 9/11] and [The White Stripes + guests on 9/27]. Check out the links for related stories and audio bits. I am especially looking forward to the White Stripes show as there are two opening acts: M. Ward and The Shins! M. Ward is unfamiliar to me- follow the links for audio tracks.

I (heart) NPR.

If you haven’t done so yet, gentle reader, by all means do subscribe to the [NPR Concert Series RSS Feed].

MySQL Gotchas

Geek blog [Slashdot] has been abuzz since it was announced that [MySql], darlings and key ingredient of the [LAMP] explosion, is doing business with SCO, the absolute scourge of the Linux world.

Now that MySQL has been associated with the devil, some folks are giving a longer look at [PostgreSQL]. While Postgres isn’t quite as ubiquitous as MySQL, it doesn’t suffer from the reputation of being something of a “toy” database.

spam action

I have cranked up the spam filters a little more aggressively. If you, gentle reader, make a comment that isn’t about internet gambling or impotence medication, etc, and you don’t see it pop up in a reasonable amount of time, reasonable here meaning being a day or so, try sending me an email.
Don’t know my email address? Well, this is bturnip.com, so simple deduction gives the last part of the address.
What about the first part? Well, this is bturnip.com. Bonus hint- the first letter of the address is a “b”. Simple, right?
Last time I checked, I was getting about 200 emails a day. On any given day, I can expect about 6 of those to be legitimate. A little mental exercise saves me from explicitly putting my email address on this page, thus saving me from even more spam.
