ACC Hoops

The Anbesol thing still has me pretty pumped up so I’m going to add another enthusiastic contribution to the blog – this one pertaining to ACC basketball. The ACC is always head-and-shoulders above anything else the NCAA has to offer but man is it ever flat-out stacked this year. Wake Forest is ranked #1, UNC has as much talent as any team in the country, UVA is in the top 25 which is only good enough for 7th in the conference, and Ga. Tech is ranked #4 and is absolutely one of the most fun and well-coached teams to watch I can remember ever seeing. They took out Michigan last night and it was just a beat-down. The defense is reminiscent of Nolan Richardson’s old 40-minutes of hell Arkansas clubs. That team goes deep, they’re well conditioned and they run the floor like a well-oiled machine. They just wore Michigan out. Every kid in America should want to come play for Paul Hewitt. That guy has it cooking. Unfortunately for me the whole season is sold out but I’m hoping to get down to The Thrillerdome at least once this year by either buying from a scalper, eBay or, hopefully, getting free tickets from one of the Ga. Tech alum I know. Ok, that is all. Just had to give a heads-up that I recommend paying attention to the league this year.

I didn’t get the chance to see it, but apparently #3 Illinois put a hurting on #1 Wake last night. Reading about it this morning- looks like it was an old school beat down.

Yeah, I caught the very end of it, and you’re right, I gather it wasn’t pretty. They’re still 7-2 in the “ACC/Big Ten Challenge” (Maryland was the other loser, to Wisconsin) but it’s certainly a blow to have the best team in the Big Ten just put a whoopin’ on the best team in the ACC. I watched some of the late games. UNC struggled more than I would have thought against Indiana. They have loads of talent in the starting five but no depth. They’re kind of a frustrating team to watch too because you get the sense that a lot of guys on that team are just kinda dumb too. Northwestern gave UVA a game too. Oh well, I’ll still take my chances with the ACC but they came back down to earth a little last night. Ga. Tech is actually playing JMU on the 15th and I think I scored some free tickets to go see my alma mater get taken to the woodshed.

Incidentally, I think every comment I’ve made except one has been flagged for moderation since you set that process in motion. It’s no big deal and worth it if it keeps spam at bay, but I thought you’d be interested to hear the percentage of messages being flagged might be higher than you anticipated.

I watched most of the UNC-Kentucky game this weekend. UNC controlled throughout but couldn’t ever really put it out of reach after jumping out to a big lead. I will reiterate that I think UNC has as much talent in their starting five as any team in the NCAA, but they have a glaring Achilles Heel too – specifically, if you take any one of those starters out of the game with foul trouble they just fall to pieces. Felton is the big one. When that guy isn’t in the game, they just crumble. In fact, they were upset by Santa Clara already in a game in which he was suspended.

Meanwhile, Ga. Tech continues to kick ass and take names. I didn’t see the game, but they just put a smackdown on Georgia. UGA isn’t a basketball power and their team this year is particularly bad I think, but they upset Tech in double-OT last year. Anyway, I can’t wait for the ACC schedule to start to see how they look against their peers.
